The small town is situated at the foot of Hellnar Snæfellsjökul on the south side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. He belongs to the municipality Snæfellsbær and consists of several farms, a hotel, a cafe which is open in the summer, and the exhibition rooms of Snæfellsjökul National Park.

Special

This is an old fishing village, in earlier centuries, one of the largest on the coast of Snæfellsnes. Lived here in the 18th century more than 200 people who drove out in larger rowing boats for 8 and 10 man of the sea and led a rather poor life.

Today, hardly driven from here to fish. This happens, however, even from neighboring Arnarstapi out to where you can reach a very rewarding hike along the coast.

The information center of the Snæfellsjökul National Park is located in the resort. We first planned to move there after Hellissandur, but enough funds in view of the onset of the economic crisis from October 2008 are not sufficient.

Asgrimur illi

In the 18th century here Asgrimur Vigfússon ( 1758-1829 ), a man lived with two epithets: Hellnaprestur (German pastor of Hellnar ) and Asgrimur illi ( engl. the evil Asgrimur ).

He had in his first parish fallen out as a young man in Staðarsveit with his community and did so in Hellnar again, so that he was even deprived of his office twice. Guðlaugur Bergmann

Dieter Roth

The German artist Dieter Roth owned a house in Hellnar and sometimes even flew a small plane here. He had taken care for the expansion of the local airport.
