Hello, Dolly! was first sung by Carol Channing, Dolly Gallagher Levi played the original version in 1964 on Broadway. Already in December 1963 Louis Armstrong took a demo recording of Hello, Dolly!, which was used to promote the musical. The premiere of the musical took place on January 16, 1964 at the St. James Theatre in New York City instead, and quickly became a huge success. In the same month, Kapp Records released Armstrong's demo recording as a commercial single.
