Hells Canyon
The Hells Canyon (Eng. " Hell Canyon " ) is 2,438 m depth with the deepest of a river buried gorge in North America. It lies mostly in the U.S. state of Oregon, directly on the border with Idaho. He is reported under the name Hells Canyon National Recreation Area as a large-scale recreation area.
Over a distance of about 150 miles of the Snake River has carved over millions of years this gorge in the Wallowa Mountains. On the Idaho side of the canyon is bordered by the Seven Devils Mountains. The area is crossed by any road and only three roads generally lead into the canyon.
Due to the large distances from the canyon rim to canyon rim - an average of 10 miles - forms the canyon not as spectacular sights like the Grand Canyon less deep. Also, the Snake River has not so many tributaries, such as the Colorado River, which is why the Canyon area is not branched as far as the Grand Canyon.
Among the geological features of the Hells Canyon include the basalt formations on the cliffs of the lower Snake River. These are the remnants of volcanic lava that covered the Pacific Northwest before about 174 million years ago.
The canyon was dedicated in 1975 as a reserve type of a National Recreation Area and a part of it again as a Wilderness Area. The protected areas are managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service.
