Helmond Sport

Helmond Sport is a football club from the city of Helmond in the province of North Brabant, Netherlands. The club plays in the Eerste Divisie, the second Dutch league. The club colors are red and black.

History and Achievements

The club was founded in 1967, when the professional football section of the club Helmondia seceded '55. At the beginning played Helmond Sport in the Tweede Divisie, the former third professional league. But a year later, the club was promoted to the Eerste Divisie. After many years in the second division was Helmond Master of the 2nd league in 1982 and was promoted to the Premier Division. There could only be kept for two years and rose again in 1984 as 16th in the Eerste Divisie from.

A year later came the biggest success in club history. 1985 reached Helmond Sport the KNVB Cup final, which was lost by a goal in injury time against FC Utrecht 0-1.

Helmond Sport played continuously since 1984 in the second league, but occasionally took part in the relegation for the Premier Division. 2005 you missed the rise only slightly, as the decisive match against Sparta Rotterdam was only lost in the final phase. The 2006/2007 season ended on a disappointing 18th place Helmond. In the following two seasons, the North Brabant occupied in the final table seats 7 (2007/ 08) and 10 (2008/ 09).


The Lavans Stadium is striking because on a short side of the field are no grandstands, garages instead limits to the stadium, which are often used by local residents as a free -standing and seating.

Against Helmond Sport was one of the strangest goals of the Dutch Eredivisie: On December 5, 1982 Helmond played against Ajax Amsterdam. Ajax were awarded a penalty. Johan Cruyff, however, did not shoot directly on goal, but played the ball across his way past the box teammate Jesper Olsen. This still ran a few feet and put the ball on bewildered goalkeeper Otto Versfeld over again crosswise to Cruyff, who needed only had to hold the foot.
