Helmut Anheier

Helmut K. Anheier ( born April 4, 1954) is a German - American professor of sociology and Dean of the Hertie School of Governance. Since 2006 he is professor at the University of Heidelberg. He also directs the Centre for Social Investment.

Life

Anheier 1978 received his bachelor's degree in sociology and economics at the University of Trier. Two years later, he achieved his diploma. For M. A. he moved to the United States, including his M.Phil. he passed at Yale University. His Ph.D. Anheier acquired in 1986 at the Department of Sociology at Yale University.

In the following years Anheier worked inter alia as a lecturer at the University of Cologne and a visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University. In 1998 he went for three years as a lecturer in Social Policy at the London School of Economics. Subsequently, he taught as Professor of Public Policy and Social Welfare at the School of Public Affairs at the University of California at Los Angeles. In 2011, completed his term of office. The last three years of his professorship Anheier was on leave from the service.

In 2009 he was Dean of the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, where he also works as a professor of sociology, since 2006 he is professor at the University of Heidelberg. In addition, he has been a visiting professor at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia since 2008.

Prior to his academic career Anheier was employed as a Social Affairs Officer at the United Nations.

Anheier is founder of the Center for Civil Society at UCLA in California and London LSE, as well as co-founder of the Centre for Social Investment at Heidelberg University.

His current area of ​​research includes the role of nonprofits in the International Comparison and methodological issues in the interaction between globalization, civil society, and culture in general.
