Helmut Degen

Helmut Degen ( born January 14, 1911 in Aglasterhausen; † October 2, 1995 in Trossingen ) was a German composer, organist and conductor.

Life

Degen studied from 1930 at the Rheinische Music School in Cologne and from 1933 at the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms- University of Bonn, where he wrote his dissertation on the librettist of the Baroque Friedrich Christian Bressand. In 1933 he founded a youth orchestra in Cologne for New Music and worked as an organist in the Old churches. From 1937 he taught music theory at the Musikhochschule in Duisburg (since 1987 a department of the Folkwang -Hochschule ), from 1942 on Landerziehungsheim Buchenau at Hersfeld. In 1947 he moved to the University of Music Trossingen and in 1954 was appointed professor.

Music

His style is reminiscent of Paul Hindemith and he uses techniques similar to the twelve-tone technique. With youth and folk music works, he tried more widely access to contemporary music easier. In addition, he served as editor of early music.
