Helmut Hauptmann

Helmut Hauptmann ( born March 12, 1928 in Berlin ) is a German writer, who was mainly active in the GDR.

Life

Helmut Hauptmann comes from a working class family. In the final stages of World War II he served 1944/45, as Luftwaffenhelfer in Berlin and fell in Schleswig- Holstein in captivity. After graduation he worked at the Council of Greater Berlin. Since the early fifties he lives as an editor, journalist and author in Berlin.

Helmut Hauptmann is the author of narrative works that reflect the ideological optimism of the early GDR, as well as reports that process the travel experiences of the author in different countries of the Eastern bloc.

Helmut Hauptmann was a member of the Writers Union of the GDR and since 1972 the PEN center of the GDR since 1956. He received the following awards: 1958 Erich- Weinert- medal, 1960 the Heinrich Mann Prize 1964 Art Prize of fdgb and 1969 the Heinrich Heine Prize of the Ministry of Culture of the GDR.
