Helmuth Schmalzl

Helmuth Schmalzl ( born October 8, 1948 in Ortisei ) is an Italian former Alpine skier. The South Tyrolean belonged in the first half of the 1970s the world's best giant slalom racers. After his resignation, he was more than a decade working as a coach of the Italian national ski team, he is since 1998 world cup FIS race director.

Biography

Schmalzl won the first World Cup points in tenth of departure in Val Gardena, on 14 February 1969. Until the next success message but three years passed. In the meantime, Schmalzl had specialized in the disciplines of giant slalom and slalom. At the Olympic Winter Games Sapporo in 1972 he went to sixth place in the slalom. Only a week later he scored as third in the giant slalom in Banff the first podium finish.

In the following 1972/73 season two third places came in the giant slalom of the criterion of the first snow in Val d'Isere and the 3- Tre race in Madonna di Campiglio and several placings in the top ten added. In the giant slalom discipline rating Schmalzl was sixth. Similarly successful was the 1973/ 74. On December 8, 1973, he drove in the giant slalom in Val d'Isere to second place and achieved the best result of his career. In the discipline standings, he eventually finished fourth. Also fourth in the giant slalom, he was at the 1974 World Cup in St. Moritz.

In March 1975 Schmalzl retired from professional racing. He then worked as director of the winter sports resort Piancavallo near Aviano. In 1988 he assumed the post of head coach of the Italian national ski team. After he had gained experience as Chief of Security World Cup piste Saslong, Schmalzl was appointed by the FIS Technical Delegate for 1998. In this capacity, he is primarily responsible for the preparation and course setting of downhill race in the World Cup and the Olympic Games and World Championships.
