Hematoporphyrin, also Haematoporphyrin, (English: hematoporphyrin ) is created by the acidic hydrolysis of the hemoglobin. Here, the protein chains to be cleaved, and the iron ( II) ion removed. Moreover, the two vinyl groups are hydrated, hematoporphyrin is thus an iron-free heme.
Properties
Hematoporphyrin differs from protoporphyrin IX, characterized in that the two vinyl groups have been transferred as a result of addition of water in the hydroxyethyl radicals. Since the reaction does not take place stereospecifically, there hematoporphyrin of 4 stereoisomers.
Use
- Detection of blood in the stool ( hematoporphyrin test, guaiac test)
- Photosensibilierung of tumors ( Photodynamic Therapy - PDT)
- Antidepressant since the 1920s
