Hemiscylliidae

Offspring of braungebänderten Bambushais ( Chiloscyllium punctatum )

The bamboo or lip shark ( Hemiscylliidae ) are a family of Ammenhaiartigen ( Orectolobiformes ). They live in the tropical Indo-Pacific coastal, from Madagascar to Australia, the Philippines and Japan.

Features

Bamboo sharks are usually only 50 to 70 inches long. The two largest species, the Braungebänderte bambooshark ( Chiloscyllium punctatum ) and the Epaulette ( Hemiscyllium ocellatum ), reach a length of one meter. Many bamboo sharks are patterned with colored bands or spots. You have two spineless dorsal fins, a small, rounded anal fin, which is far behind the second dorsal fin, five gill slits and short barbels around the mouth. There are sluggish animals that spend most of the day lying on the floor. Small fish and invertebrates they feed on. Bamboo sharks are suitable because of their small final size for aquariums.

Propagation

Female bamboo sharks seem to be able to store male sperm. In Karlsruhe aquarium multiple births have been observed in a isolated held females.
