Hemispheres is the sixth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush. It was published in 1978 under the label Mercury Records.

Style and songs

With Hemispheres Rush continued the musical direction they had taken with A Farewell to Kings, fort, where the album maintains a slightly harder and more progressive style, especially in terms of complexity of the songs terms ( unusual time signatures, use of the rock rather unusual instruments, etc.). Bassist Geddy Lee placing more emphasis synthesizer, and drummer Neil Peart was experimenting - even more so than on the previous album - with various percussion elements, such as the cowbell ( especially noticeable in the song " The Trees ").

With the song " Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres " " Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage " the Cygnus series, which on the album A Farewell to Kings was with had begun completed. It is also the third (and so far last) Rush song that took up a whole side of the LP. In the " Cygnus Bringer Of Balance" They also find some musical elements from " Cygnus X-1, Book I: The Voyager " again.

" Circumstances" is a very short song that is rather classified in the hard rock. Remarkable are here Geddy Lee's bass lines and the instrumental part in the increasingly synthesizers are used and will almost completely eliminate the electric bass.

" The Trees " begins, as the song " A Farewell to Kings ", with an acoustic guitar part. Also noteworthy is the instrumental part, are used in the synthesizer and percussion elements.

The last song, " La Villa Strangiato " is an instrumental. In 12 parts divided, it mainly reflects the technical skills of the band members. The song is considered by many Rush fans as one of their best works.
