Hemmiken is a municipality in the district of Sissach the canton of Basel -Country in Switzerland.

Geography

Hemmiken is located north of the wiper on the mountain Hemmikerbach in a tributary of the Ergolztal.

The municipality is bordered to the north by Hemmiken Buus, on the northeast by Hellikon (AG), to the east by Wegenstetten (AG), on the southeast by Rothenfluh and southwest and west by Ormalingen.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms shows an upright and two crossed Steinhauer tools in blue on a golden ground. It was created in 1945.

History

The first mention of Hemmiken dates from the year 1255 as Enninchon. The village belonged to the late Middle Ages to the rule Thierstein - Farnsburg, from 1461 it belonged to the city of Basel. During the Swabian War and the Thirty Years' War it was repeatedly sacked because of its proximity to the then Austrian Frick valley. From the thriving Steinhauerei in the 18th and 19th centuries decorated door supports to older homes can be seen

Traffic

The village is connected by secondary roads with Buus, Ormalingen and Wegenstetten. A coach course goes from Rothenfluh Hemmiken over to the station in Gelterkinden.
