The Hemsberg seen from the south

The Hemsberg is a 262.2 meter-high hill at the Hessian Odenwald mountain road in the south-east of Bensheim. The area around Hemsberg has a very diverse flora and fauna. At the summit there is a 1902 erbauter Bismarck Tower, which can be used as an observation tower.

Bismarck Tower

On May 17, 1897, the Postmaster A.D. excited Ernst Hall wax and Bensheimer entrepreneurs Commerce Wilhelm Euler (1847-1934) on to build on the top of a Hemsberges Bismarck tower. The tower was built according to plans by Heinrich Metz village and completed July 6, 1902. The tower has a height of 15 meters and is in the possession of the Odenwaldklub. The construction costs for its construction amounted to 10,000 marks. From 2008, the under preservation tower to be renovated.

In fine weather, the tower on Sundays is managed. From the indigenous population of the Bismarck tower is usually referred to as Hemsbergturm.

Flora and Fauna

The solubility and limestone soils of Hemsberges help ensure that below the summit on the southern and western slopes of one of the largest vineyards in the Hessian Mountain Road is the location " Hemsberg ". A large part of the forest and meadow area around the Hemsberg was provided, however, due to its diverse wildlife conservation area. On the meadows is one of the largest deposits of helmet - leaved orchid Germany. 430 of the 2,500 flowering plants occurring in Europe were mapped in the field of Hemsberges. To grow including the lime-loving blood red cranesbill, the Rapunzel bellflower, the ragwort, the Carthusian pink, the True bedstraw and the very rare mountain fennel on Hemsberg. Northeast from the summit grow orchids and columbine. The forested upper part of the Hemsbergs is covered in a high proportion of cherry and ash trees that bloom in succession from May to June white.
