The " Hemus " or Awtomagistrala " Hemus " or Awtomagistrala A2 motorway ( Bulgarian Автомагистрала A2 or Автомагистрала Хемус ) is a planned and partially completed highway in Bulgaria. The final length will be 433 km, 163 km are already in operation. In the future, it should connect with Sofia Varna on the Black Sea coast.

The " Hemus " highway is named after the ancient name for the Balkan Mountains.

Cuts in operating

The first section was a model project of Todor Zhivkov communist leader, the ( in Sofia) begins at Dolni Bogrov and ended in his birthplace Pravets. The second section, Pravets - Yablanitsa was officially put into operation on 5 December 1999. The route goes through the Balkan Mountains on a length of 5.47 km, 16 km were also further developed. There were built two viaducts and a tunnel. The entire section Gorni Bogrov - Yablanitsa also contains three more tunnels. The construction of the section began in 1984, but rested until the late 1980s due to lack of money. He could be completed only in the years 1998 to 1999.

On 30 December 2005, the Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev opened the 12.8 km long section of Shumen Kaspichan .. In August 2013, closing the gap in the first 8 km from Sofia was closed, so is the highway of the Sofia ring road to Yablanitsa and navigable from Shumen to Varna.

For the further construction of the route a public-private partnership is under discussion.
