Henk Zeevalking

Hendrik Jan ( Henk ) Zeevalking ( born June 7, 1922 in Laag- Keppel, † 23 February 2005 in Delft) was a Dutch politician of the Democraten 66 ( D66 ).

Life

Zeevalking, who studied law in Utrecht, became politically active at a young age. He was a member of the Free Democratic Youth Federation and was from 1947 to 1949 Member of the Dutch Student Council. Later he joined the " Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Démocratie " (VVD ). In 1966 he left the party and was one of the founders of the " Democraten 66 " ( D66 ). From October 1979 to September 1981 he was chairman of the D66. 1970 to 1975 he was a member of the municipal council of Utrecht for them. From June 1975 to September 1977 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice. 1977 to 1979 he served as deputy of the D66 member of the Tweede Kamer, the Dutch parliament. From January 1979 to September 1981 he served as mayor of the city of Rijswijk. On September 11, 1981, he was appointed Minister of Transport and Water Management ( in the Cabinet Van Agt II); he held until 4 November 1982 this office.

This ended his political career in the strict sense; in the following years practiced Zeevalking from different offices in the foundation sector and higher education; He was, for example, for several years the governing body of the TU Delft. Politics aside, he engaged, inter alia, to for the amateur theater and Freemasonry.
