Henning Stahlberg

Henning Stahlberg ( born November 18, 1965 in West Berlin ) is a German physicist and professor at the Biozentrum, University of Basel, Switzerland.

Life

Henning Stahlberg studied physics at the Technical University ( TU) Berlin and received his doctorate from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne ( EPFL) in 1997. Subsequently he studied for six years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Biozentrum, University of Basel. From 2003 to 2009 he was first an assistant professor and then associate professor at the University of California, Davis. Since 2009 Stahlberg research as a Professor of Structural Biology at the Biozentrum, University of Basel. He is also director of the center technology platform for cellular microscopy and nano- analysis (C- CINA ).

Work

Henning Stahlberg investigates biological membrane systems of the atomic structure of individual proteins to the cellular context. Using light and electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography and electron tomography, he examines the structure of ion channels and membrane transporters. In addition, he developed computer algorithms for 3D reconstruction of proteins. Using these methods, it was possible Stahlberg among others, the 3D structure of the " type III secretion system " ( T3SS ) to clarify in intact bacteria. In addition, he was able to show that individual proteins at the base of the needle T3SS are resilient. To model the 2D crystal structure of membrane proteins he developed the 2dx software.
