Henri Brémond

Henri Bremond ( born July 31, 1865 in Aix -en- Provence, Bouches -du -Rhône, † August 17 1933 in Arthez's - d'Asson, Département Pyrénées- Atlantiques) was a French literary critic, theologian and writer, Catholic philosopher with modernist sympathies, temporarily Jesuit.

Life

Even at age 17 joined the son of a notary of the Society of Jesus and spent his novitiate in England. On September 8, 1892 he was ordained a priest. In 1901 he met George Tyrrell, with whom he has since shared a deep friendship. 1904 Bremond, the Jesuits left again because he had trouble with his nonconformist temperament. The Archbishop of Aix -en- Provence, François Bonnifay, took him into the diocese clergy. The assistant to Tyrell's funeral at which Bremond, who had stood by the dying man, in civilian clothes blessed the grave, earned him a temporary suspension from the priesthood.

The French writer and founder of the Equipes Socials, Robert Garric, reported on the appearance of Henri Bremond: The Abbé was tall, gaunt, so huge; he considered one of the top, with a lively view, from which flashed with mischief; the lips thin and compressed, he scattered his subtle comments, sprayed and turned the conversation.

Bremond wrote for the Annales de philosophie chrétienne, the Correspondant, the Revue des Deux Mondes and the Revue de Paris. He was also a prolific author of books on literary themes and to Catholicism.

As the successor of Louis Duchesne, he was a member of the Académie française in 1923 selected ( fauteuil 36). He was also an officer of the Legion of Honour.

Reception

His main works include the unfinished monumental Histoire littéraire du sentiment elfbändige religieux en France depuis la fin de guerres of religion jusqu'à nos jours (1916-1936) and La Poésie pure: Un débat sur la poésie. La poésie et les poètes (1926 ), which he co-authored with Robert de Souza. His main field of research was the ascetical and mystical literature of the École française de spiritualité, a French direction of spirituality. He was also one of the first biographers of John Henry Newman. The poet Maurice Martin du Gard, likewise a member of the Legion of Honour, Bremond une passion littéraire effrénée attested ( an unbridled passion for literature ).

The assignment to the modernists today is relativized. The correspondence with Maurice Blondel was published in 1970 and sparked a new interest in the work of Henri Bremond from.
