Henri Delaunay

Henri Delaunay (* June 15, 1883; † November 9, 1955 ) was a French footballer and Secretary General of UEFA. According to him the Coupe Henri Delaunay was the trophy for each winner of the European Football Championship named.

Already in 1927 he had the idea for a European Championship for national teams, but this was rejected by FIFA. At that time he was already the Secretary General of the French Federation. From 1954 until his death Delaunay was the General Secretary.

Only in 1957, after his death, the plans for a European Championship, which was then discharged from 1958 to 1960 for the first time concretized. His son Pierre Delaunay continued to work on the realization of this project after his father's death with success.
