Henri Dutrochet

Henri René Joachim Dutrochet ( born November 14, 1776 in Néon, Poitou, † February 4, 1847 in Paris) was a French botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Dutr. ".

Dutrochet studied from 1802 medicine at the University of Paris, where he received his doctorate in 1806 for Dr. med. From 1808, he was a military doctor in Spain. After an illness of typhoid he lived at Chateau- Renault. From 1810, he was a private scholar and lived for a time in Paris.

Dutrochet explored the principle of osmosis and coined the terms endosmosis and exosmose. He also watched as one of the first botanists the multiplication of cells by division. He stressed the importance of the cells to the organisms as one of the first naturalists. Next he discovered the relationship between the presence of chlorophyll in plants and photosynthesis. Since 1831 he was a member of the Academy of Sciences in Paris.

The endemic to the Mascarene genus Trochetia ( Malvaceae ) is named after him.
