Henri Estienne (elder)

Henricus Stephanus, actually: Henry Estienne, (* 1460, † 1520) was a printer in Paris.

He must have married the widow of the printer Johann Higman. Its partner was Wolfgang Hopyl (also Hopilius, Hopil ). New friends he was with the humanist Faber Stapulensis.

In the May 7, 1502, he printed together with Hopil his first book on the ethics of Aristotle. In this volume, first appeared on the name of the printer and publisher Stephen, and is the first product of perhaps the most important printer dynasty of the 16th century. From 1504 he worked alone again. Until his death, he had over 120 works, mostly published Folium in Latin and in the format.

His son Robert Estienne was also printer, Henri Estienne his grandson with the same name.
