Henri Laurens

Henri Laurens ( born February 18, 1885 in Paris, † May 5, 1954 Paris) was a French sculptor and graphic artist of Cubism.

Life and work

Lauren graduated from 1899 to 1905, first a stone mason and was devoted to the ornamental sculptor working in construction. In his spare time, he produced sculptures in the style of Auguste Rodin. In 1911 he joined the group of artists of Montparnasse and was introduced until 1912 by Georges Braque, with whom he was friends for life, in the synthetic cubism. In 1913 he participated for the first time at the Salon des Independants in Paris and learned three years later know Juan Gris, Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso, after which until 1919 "Still life and heads cut diagonally nested, painted layers of wood and metal ," in part in the style of African tribal masks, emerged.

Between 1920 and 1930 Laurens created based on Picasso's Cubist paintings post- Cubist works that are no longer designed, but are modeled. From 1930 the figures lost their cubist design and won under the influence of Surrealism " a rounded - bulky physicality. " After a stay at sea in 1934, his topic changed towards " amphibious sirens and other sensual mermaids or Muses. " A major work from this period is the finished in 1952 L' Amphion before the University of Caracas, Venezuela, on an enlarged (including base) 4.40 meters height version of the L' Amphion of 1937. according to Greek legend, acquiesced in the building of the wall of Thebes the stones together only by the sound of Amphion Lyra. This work is by Laurens ' own words, the attempt of a " synthesis of music and architecture." In the Bronze Le Matin ( The Morning ) 1944 Laurens processed the overwhelming suffering with the associated occupation by the Germans. So many of his friends had left Paris and returned to the part never returned.

Henri Laurens died in 1954 at the age of 69 years in his hometown. He is buried in the cemetery Montparnasse. The grave adorns one of his works of art, the sculpture La Douleur.
