Henri Lefebvre

Henri Lefebvre ( born June 16, 1901 in Hagetmau country; † 29 June 1991 Navarrenx, Pyrénées -Atlantiques ) was a French Marxist sociologist, intellectual and philosopher. He was considered one of the " fathers" of the Paris student riots in May 1968.

Life

Lefebvre attended the prestigious Lycée Louis -le- Grand in Paris. He originally wanted to be a mathematician, but then studied after an aborted legal studies philosophy at the University of Aix -en- Provence in the Catholic philosopher Maurice Blondel and the Sorbonne in Paris under Léon Brunschvicg and completed his studies in 1920 with a doctorate.

He was awarded a diploma for the higher education service and was 1929-1940 teacher of philosophy. In 1928, he joined the French Communist Party ( PCF ) to. He belonged to the group " Philosophes " (Paul Nizan among other things ) that developed marxiste Approaches to a philosophical critique of bourgeois ideology in its journal Revue. In 1930 he became a professor, but was discharged in 1940 because of his party affiliation.

1940 Germany defeated France and occupied it. In the same year Lefebvre joined the French Resistance. After the liberation of France in 1944 he was rehabilitated as artistic director of French radio in Toulouse. After the war, Lefebvre drew attention to himself as a writer of articles and essays on Marxism and its main representatives. Considerable sensation was caused by his work Critique de la vie quotidienne (1946 ), a critique of bourgeois society, Lefebvre continued in later works.

From 1944 to 1949 he was director of the Radio Diffusion Française, a radio station in Toulouse. Maitre de Recherches 1949-1961 at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS ).

1958, the PCF him due to his critical remarks about Khrushchev and the uprising in Hungary in his book Problems of Marxism today from the party. Despite the exclusion Lefebvre remained Marxism life together.

1961-1965 Lefebvre was a professor of sociology at the Faculté des Lettres at the University of Strasbourg, then at the Nanterre. In 1967, he headed the Department of Sociology at Nanterre. His last position was at the Institut d' Urbanisme of Paris.

Lefebvre died in 1991. He has left an extraordinarily extensive body of work. In her obituary wrote the English journal Radical Philosophy: " the most prolific of French Marxist intellectuals died in the night of 28 June 29, 1991, less than two weeks after his 90th birthday. During his long career, his work was repeatedly in fashion and out of fashion again. It has influenced the development not only of philosophy but also of sociology, geography, political science and literature. "

In Germany his critique of everyday life was most well known.
