Henri Simonet

Henri François Simonet ( born May 10, 1931 in Brussels, † 15 February 1996) was a Belgian politician and 1977 President of the Council of the European Communities.

Studies and professional activities

Simonet studied political science and economics at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Later he was a professor there, and from 1975 to 1978 and President of the Institute for European Studies at the Free University of Brussels.

Political career

Party memberships and mayor of Anderlecht

Simonet began his political career as a member of the Socialist Party ( PSB). 1985, he left from the PSB and joined the Parti Liberal Réformateur (PRL ) in, in which he referred xenophobic positions soon.

In 1966 he was elected mayor of Anderlecht. This office he held until 1984. During his tenure, Anderlecht developed from a characteristically industrial working-class town to a future-oriented city with the establishment of large shopping centers and the establishment of the Erasmus Hospital, Free University of Brussels. His son Jacques Simonet, who also moved from the PSB to the PRL and since 2000 was also mayor of Anderlecht, died of a heart attack on 14 June 2007 as the reigning incumbent at the age of 43 years.

European politicians and ministers

1972 Simonet, who was also a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 1966, was appointed by Prime Minister Gaston Eyskens to economic ministers in his cabinet.

Between 1973 and 1977 he was then vice-president of the European Commission, and thus representative of François -Xavier Ortoli.

On 3 June 1977 he was appointed Foreign Minister by Prime Minister Leo Tindemans to succeed Renaat Van Elslande. As such, he was in the second half of 1977 and President of the Council of the European Community. The Office of the Foreign Minister, he also kept in the governments of Paul Vanden Boeynants and Wilfried Martens up to 18 May 1980. Between 1977 and 1979 he was also Secretary of State for the regional economy.
