Henrik Horn

Henrik Henriksson Horn af Marie Borg ( dt: Heinrich Horn of Marienburg) ( May 22nd 1618 Stockholm, † February 22, 1693 in Stade ) was a Swedish Field Marshal, Admiral and Governor-General of the duchies of Bremen and Verden.

Life

Henrik Horn was born as the son of the Swedish diplomat Henrik Horn and his wife Anna Jönsdotter Sneckenborg. He married three times and had three daughters.

Horn embarked on a military career, in 1634 lieutenant colonel in 1643 and 1654 cavalry general. Under King Charles X Gustav in 1656 he was involved in the war against Poland and won the Battle of Warsaw. In 1657 he led the armed forces in Finland.

1665 Horn Field Marshal in 1666 Governor General of Bremen- Verden, 1677 also a member of the Swedish Empire Council. As Governor-General, he commanded 1675/76 the Swedish troops against the Allied armies in the German Bremen- Verden campaign, but ultimately had to capitulate.

Although he had no experience in naval warfare horn was in 1677 appointed Admiral and handed over the command of the Swedish naval forces. In the naval battle in the Køgebucht he suffered a heavy defeat against Denmark.

Then he succeeded in recapturing occupied by the Danish Norway Jämtland. In 1678 he was commander of the Swedish Army in Livonia, had only 8000 soldiers but no success (hunting across the Curonian Lagoon ). After the peace agreement in 1680, he was again governor in Stade, where he eventually died.
