Henrik Reuterdahl

Henrik Reuterdahl ( born September 10, 1795 in Malmö, † June 28, 1870 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish church historian, Lutheran Bishop of Lund and Archbishop of Uppsala.

Life

After studying at the University of Lund doctorate Reuterdahl 1817 Doctor of Philosophy, and then was appointed lecturer at the Theological Seminary of the University of Lund. In 1824 he became an associate adjunct faculty of theology, prefect of the seminary in 1826 and priest in 1827 and a member of the cathedral chapter. In 1830 he became a Doctor of Divinity. doctorate. From 1833 to 1850 he worked as a librarian at the University Library Lund and had next to it in 1841 a professor of dogmatic theology. With Johan Henrik Thomander he gave from 1828 to 1832 and from 1836 to 1840 the Theologisk Quartalskrift out in its first edition he took a commitment to Friedrich Schleiermacher. Especially in his Inledning till Teologien ( Introduction to Theology, Lund 1837) one notices the model of Schleiermacher Short presentation of theological study. Great influence on him had also Erik Gustaf Geijer.

1845 moved Reuterdahl to the Chair of Church History ( connected with the office of provost ) and devoted himself to his ( already previously started ) major work, the Svenska Kyrkans historia ( history of the Church of Sweden; vol 1 under the title The introduction and the life of Ansgarius 1837 German published ). By 1865 five volumes that represent the history to the 16th century published. The work is considered the beginning of modern church history research in Sweden. The edited by Magnus von Celse Apparatus ad historiam sueco - gothicam he enriched with new, the Statutes of the Swedish councils until the Reformation containing parts.

In April 1852 Reuterdahl, who had been since 1844 a member of the minister stand in Swedish stands the Reichstag was, at the instigation of the Crown Prince Karl XV. appointed by King Oscar I as Minister of spiritual and educational matters. Here he fought for a conservative church policy, in contrast to his former colleagues Thomander. 1855, Bishop of Lund, 1856 Archbishop of Uppsala and served until his death as the highest representative of the Church of Sweden, which he coined in a high ecclesiastical sense. In 1865, he inaugurated together with the Anglican Bishop John Whitehouse an Anglican church in Stockholm, which is considered as a prelude to the later and still very close relations of the Church of Sweden to the Church of England.

Reuterdahl Vitterhets History och Antikvitets academies and 1848 in the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences was incorporated in 1838 in the Kungliga, from 1852 until his death he was also a member of the Swedish Academy ( Chair 10).
