Henrique Oswald

Henrique Oswald ( born April 14, 1852 in Rio de Janeiro, † June 9, 1931 ) was a Brazilian composer and diplomat.

Henrique was the only son of Swiss immigrant Hans Jacob (Jean - Jacques) Oswald ( 1805-1878 ) from Oberaach TG and its coming from Livorno / Italy wife Maria Charlotta Louise Oratia Cantagalli ( 1816-1903 ); called ' Carlota '.

Oswald was since 1868 in Florence students of pianist Giuseppe Buonamici. He was then Vice-Consul in Le Havre and later in Genoa. From 1903 to 1906 he was director of the Instituto Nacional de Música in Rio de Janeiro. Then he was again in the diplomatic service. From 1911 he lived as a teacher and composer in Rio de Janeiro. 1881 married Henrique Oswald with Laudomia Gasperini ( 1859-1932 ), daughter of Ottavio Gasperini ( Director of the Education Institute, Florence ) and Maria Bombernard. They had five children; inter alia, Carlos Oswald (1882-1971), painter and engraver in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro and Br Alfredo Oswald SJ ( 1884-1972 ).

In addition to numerous chamber works Henrique composed three operas, a symphony, a piano and a violin concerto, piano pieces and songs.
