Henry Alfred Todd

Henry Alfred Todd ( born March 13, 1854 in Woodstock ( Illinois); † January 3, 1925 in New York City ) was an American linguist.

Life and work

Todd studied at Princeton University and then in Paris ( with Gaston Paris), in Berlin (with Adolf Tobler ), in Rome and Madrid. In 1885 he received his doctorate at Johns Hopkins University with Aaron Marshall Elliott with the written work in Paris Le dit de la panthère d' amours. Poëme you XIIIe siècle par Nicole de Margival (Paris 1883, New York 1966) and taught there until 1891. From 1891 to 1893 he taught at Stanford University, from 1893 he was a professor of Romance Philology at Columbia University in New York City.

Todd was 1906 President of the Modern Language Association. In 1910 he was ( with Raymond Weeks ) founder and editor of the journal Romanic Review.
