Henry Bentinck, 11th Earl of Portland

Henry Noel Bentinck, 11th Earl of Portland ( * October 2, 1919; † 30 January 1997) was a British peer and politician. He was a member of the German - English noble family Bentinck.

Life and career

Bentinck was the son of Robert Charles, Count Bentinck (1875-1932) and Lady Norah Ida Emily Noel ( 1881-1939 ). Before he inherited the British title, he led since 1932 the old German title of ( imperial ) count. Due to a special royal permission of the family was permitted since 1886, to use the title in the United Kingdom.

He attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire.

During World War II Bentinck served as an officer in the Coldstream Guards. He was wounded twice during this time and was taken prisoner. From 1952 to 1955 he worked as assistant cattle in Tasmania.

With his first wife, Pauline Ursula Mellowes (1921-1967), whom he married in London on 13 October 1940 he had three children, two daughters and a son Sorrel and Anna, Timothy Charles Robert Noel Bentinck, later the 12th Earl of Portland. As of February 23, 1974 he was married to his second wife Jennifer Hopkins.

Bentinck wrote several books: " Anyone Can Understand the Atom " was published in 1965 and dealt with the issue of nuclear energy. In 1966 he published the children's book "The Avenue of Flutes " In 1971, the thriller " Isoworg ".

On July 30, 1990 Bentinck inherited the title of Earl of Portland, but not the title of Duke of Portland, died out of it. Bentinck was a direct descendant of Johann Wilhelm Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland.

Bentinck died in January 1997 at the age of 77 years.
