Henry Carr

Henry Carr ( born November 27, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan ) is a former American sprinter and Olympic gold medalist.

Carr was one of the strongest runners in the 1960s. Even in high school he was an extraordinary sprinter before he was during his studies at Arizona State University star. He won three national titles, set a new world record over 200 meters, 220 yards and 4 x 440 yards on. In 1963, he won the NCAA Championship over 200 meters and set in the same year a new world record over 200 meters at 20.4 seconds, and a more than 220 yards on in 20.3 seconds. In 1964, he increased his services again and set a new world record for 220 yards on in 20.2 seconds. In the years 1963 and 1964 he led over 200 meters at the world rankings.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, he won the 200 - meter dash gold medal, ahead of his compatriot Paul Drayton and Edwin Roberts of Trinidad and Tobago as well as the team gold medal in the 4 x 400 - meter relay, along with Ollan Cassell, Mike Larrabee and Ulis Williams, ahead of the teams from the United Kingdom and Trinidad and Tobago.

After his playing days as a sprinter he became a professional football player with the New York Giants. From 1965 to 1967 he was a total of 37 times used in regular games, but never ran on as a starter.
