Henry Holmes (composer)

Henry Holmes ( born November 7, 1839 in London, † December 9, 1905 in San Francisco) was an English composer, violinist and music teacher.

Holmes had his first violin instruction from his father and also worked as a choir singer. In 1847 he entered the age of eight with his brother Alfred Holmes as a violinist at the Haymarket Theatre. 1853 they gave again concerts in London, in 1855 they made a tour through Belgium, Germany, Austria and Sweden.

Later, Holmes settled in London, where he worked as a violin professor at the Royal College of Music. Among his pupils were, inter alia, Julius Gold and Kathleen Parlow. He composed five symphonies in addition, a concert overture and a violin concerto, among other things chamber works, including two string quintets, as well as the cantatas Praise Ye The Lord and Christmas and numerous songs.
