Henry Howard (Rhode Island)

Henry Howard ( born April 2, 1826 in Cranston, Rhode Iceland, † September 22, 1905 ) was an American politician and 1873-1875 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland.

Early years and business promotion

After leaving school, Howard studied at the later Governor William W. Hoppin Jura. After his graduation and his 1851 was admitted to the bar he practiced this profession for several years before he found a job at the company Harris Manufacturing. These belonged to his father Elisha Harris, who had also been governor of Rhode Iceland 1847-1849. 1858 Howard opened a branch of the company in New York City. In 1861 he returned to Rhode Iceland, where he quickly rose in the management of this company. After a merger, he became in 1865 president of the Harris Manufacturing Company.

Political career

Politically, Henry Howard was a member of the Republican Party, whose national party he attended in 1856 as a delegate. John Charles Frémont There has been nominated for presidential candidate of the party. In Rhode Iceland, he became a deputy in the House of Representatives of the State. In 1873 he was elected as a candidate of his party for the new governor.

Howard stepped up his new post on 27 May 1873. After a re-election in 1874 he was able to remain in this position until May 25, 1875. Another candidacy he refused. As Governor, he stood up for the interests of agriculture and industry. It was then that legislation to regulate the railroads were adopted and the road network was expanded.

At the end of his tenure, Howard again devoted his business interests. With two partners, he founded in 1878 the Armington and Sims Engine Company which manufactured steam engines. Thomas Alva Edison used machines from this company for its power plant in New York. The company existed until 1896. Due to economic problems, they had to file for bankruptcy this year. The facilities were taken over by the Eastern Engine Company. In 1879, Henry Howard also had the Providence Telephone Company launched, whose president he was to remain until his death. Among other positions, he was also a director of the National Bank of North America.

In 1876 he was nominated again was a delegate to the Republican National Convention, on the Rutherford B. Hayes presidential candidate. After this had been elected president, he called Howard in the American delegation for the World Exhibition in Paris. Henry Howard was with Catherine Harris, the daughter of ex- Governor Elisha Harris, married. The couple had three children.
