The Henry Hudson Bridge is a predominantly built of steel toll bridge in New York City. It connects the Bronx with the northern end of Manhattan.

History

Early as 1930 Robert Moses was planning the Henry Hudson Parkway, which should result from the west side of Manhattan to the Bronx -Westchester Line. Start of construction of the Henry Hudson Bridge was then in June 1935, with completion on 12 December 1936. In July 1938 then the upper level has been connected. In 1940, then merged the Robert Moses Parkway Authority Henry Hudson to the larger Triborough Bridge Authority.

Construction

The bridge was designed by David B. Steinman and was opening in 1936, the longest arch bridge in the world. The bridge has two roadway levels that have an aggregate of seven traffic lanes, and a pedestrian walkway. The upper level has been built for this traffic in the Bronx and the lower level for traffic to Manhattan. The Henry Hudson Bridge spans 256 meters span and 44 meters height Spuyten Duyvil Creek and the connecting Manhattan and the Bronx. It is part of the Henry Hudson Parkway and honored as New York State Route 9A.

At the time of opening it was something special, namely 673 m, the longest arch bridge in the world.
