Henry I (archbishop of Trier)

Henry I († 964 July 3 in Rome ) was from 956 until his death Archbishop of Trier.

He was the brother of Bishop Poppo I of Würzburg ( † 961 ) and probably the son of Count Heinrich of the family of Babenberg Frankish; another brother was probably Berthold von Schweinfurt, the powerful Count in the Eastern Franks.

Henry was - together with Wolfgang, who later became Bishop of Regensburg - trained in the monastery of Reichenau; Wolfgang and he later went to Stephen of Novara in the new cathedral school in Würzburg, where his brother Poppo since 941 Bishop was. King Otto I appointed him, which is called by Flodoard as propinquus of the Emperor, 956 Archbishop of Trier.

On May 26, 961 in addition to Bruno of Cologne and William of Mainz was the third Archbishop of Otto II in Aachen anointed king. He also participated in Otto's followed by some Italian campaign and was thus present in Rome when Otto the popes John XII. and Benedict V. deposed. Henry died in Rome of a plague that had broken out in the army of the emperor. He was buried in Parma and reburied later in the Trier Cathedral.
