Henry III, Duke of Limburg

Henry III. (* 1140, † June 21, 1221 in Klosterrath ) was Duke of Limburg and Count of Arlon from 1165 to his death. He was the son of Duke Henry II and Matilde of Saffenberg. In 1172 he fought against Henry IV, Count of Luxembourg, and its allies Baldwin V, Count of Hainaut, where especially the surroundings of the Arlon was devastated. In 1183 he supported the election of Folmar Kardens Archbishop of Trier and turned it against the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.

Henry took with his son Walram part in the Third Crusade. They traveled independently of the main army of Emperor Barbarossa and joined in the Holy Land before the army of Richard the Lionheart on.

To the Bailiwick of Sint- Truiden he had against his nephew Henry I, Duke of Brabant prevail, who claimed the office as part of his mother's dowry. 1191 the war ended, the Duke of Limburg vassal of the Duke of Brabant was.

In his last years, Henry III supported. Otto of Brunswick against Philip of Swabia in the battle for the German crown. 1214 he participated in the Battle of Bouvines.

1189 Before he married his second wife, Adelaide of Henneberg ( † about 1198 ), daughter of Poppo VI. , Count of Henneberg, Viscount of Würzburg. This marriage remained childless.
