Henry III, Duke of Mecklenburg

Henry III, Duke of Mecklenburg. (C. 1337; † April 24, 1383 at Schloss Schwerin ) was from 1379 to his death, Duke of Mecklenburg.

Life

Henry was the first son of Duke Albrecht II of Mecklenburg and his wife Euphemia, who was a sister of the Swedish king Magnus Eriksson. In his first marriage he was from 1362 with Ingeborg of Denmark, daughter of Valdemar IV of Denmark, married and had four children with her:

  • Albrecht IV, co-regent from 1383 to 1388
  • Euphemia, from 1377 married to John V of Werle - Güstrow
  • Mary, mother of King Erik VII, married to Duke Wartislaw VII of Pomerania
  • Ingeborg, from 1398 abbess in Klarissenkloster Ribnitz

On February 26, 1377 Duke entered into a second marriage with Matilda of Werle - goods, a daughter of Bernard II of Werle. However, this compound remained childless.

After an accident at a tournament in Wismar Henry III died. on April 24, 1383 at his castle in Schwerin and was buried in the Doberan Minster. Then his brother Magnus I., the government took over to 1384 for a short time, together with Henry's son Albrecht IV in the Duchy.
