Henry Lloyd (governor)

Henry Lloyd ( born February 21, 1852 Dorchester County, Maryland, † December 30, 1920 in Cambridge, Maryland ) was an American politician (Democratic Party) and from 1885 to 1888 the 40th Governor of Maryland.

Early years and political rise

Henry Lloyd was the grandson of Edward Lloyd, who had been 1809-1811 Governor of Maryland. He attended the 1871 Cambridge Academy. After a subsequent law degree, he was admitted in 1873 as a lawyer. He then began to practice in Cambridge. Between 1875 and 1881 he was employed by the Court of Audit ( Auditor of the Court ). Between 1882 and 1884 he was a member of the Senate of Maryland and became its President.

Governor of Maryland

Following the resignation of Governor Robert Milligan McLane Lloyd had to take over the office of governor as President of the Senate in accordance with the Constitution. On January 21, 1886, he was officially authorized by the Legislature to end the opened his predecessor's term. Thus he was between 27 March 1885, the January 11, 1888 Governor of his state. During his tenure, the child labor time was reduced to a maximum of ten hours per day and adopt legislation to regulate the tobacco industry and the oyster fishery.

After the end of his governorship, Lloyd withdrew from politics. Between 1892 and 1908 he was a judge in the first judicial district of the State of Maryland. After that he went into retirement. Henry Lloyd died in December 1920., With his wife Mary Elizabeth Staplefort he had a child together.
