Henry Lowther (musician)

Henry Lowther ( born July 11, 1941 in Leicester ) is a British jazz trumpeter, violinist and pianist.

Life and work

Lowther comes maternal as paternal families from brass and had cornet lessons from his father. Later, he studied violin at the Royal Academy of Music in London, as a jazz musician, he is, however, self-taught. During the 1960s he led his own formations and played with Jack Bruce and John Hiseman. In addition he worked with Mike Westbrook, the New Jazz Orchestra, and with rock and blues bands like John Mayall, Manfred Mann and the Keef Hartley band. In the 1970s he played with the leading musicians of the British jazz scene, as Michael Gibbs, Kenny Wheeler, Tony Coe, Norma Winstone, Michael Garrick, Keith Tippett and John Dankworth. In the 1980s he led his own bands again and worked with John Surman, Gordon Beck, John Taylor, Gil Evans and the London Brass Virtuosi. In the 1990s, he appeared in numerous productions with big band, like the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, Kenny Wheeler ( "Music for Large and Small Ensembles ", 1990), the London Jazz Composers Orchestra from 1987 to 1996, the "Brass Project" by John Surman and John Warren in 1992, Colin Towns, Don Weller (1996 ), Stan Tracey and George Russell's Living Time Orchestra. In the early 1990s he was a member of the Dedication Orchestra. In 2000 he played with the Frank Griffith Nonet at the Ealing Jazz Festival. He belonged to several years to the BBC Radio Orchestra and continued to work with Django Bates, Sam Rivers or Billy Cobham.
