Henry M. Youmans

Henry Melville Youmans ( born May 15, 1832 in Otego, Otsego County, New York, † July 8, 1920 in Saginaw, Michigan ) was an American politician. Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Henry Youmans attended the common schools and worked for ten years for the railway company York & Erie Railroad. In 1862 he moved to East Saginaw in Michigan, where he worked in the timber and salt industry 1863-1878. After that he lived from 1878 to 1884 in St. Clair, where he continued to work in the timber industry but also in agriculture. Then he returned to East Saginaw. He was mayor in 1886 and 1887 years. In addition, he was elected four times to the municipal council of this place.

Politically, Youmans member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1890 he was in the eighth constituency of Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Aaron T. Bliss on March 4, 1891. Since he Republican William S. Linton defeated in 1892, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1893. During this time he was chairman of the Committee for the control of expenditure on state property.

In the years 1896 and 1897 Youmans sat in the Senate from Michigan. He also worked in Bridgeport in agriculture. He died on 8 July 1920 in Saginaw.
