Henry Mill

Henry Mill (c. 1683, † 1771) was an English inventor. He worked as a hydraulic engineer for the New River Company. From the patent granted to him in 1714 on a typewriter only a few details and no subscriptions are known. This patent, however, considered to be the oldest written record of a machine for individual letters.

The patent relates to a machine for " impressions or transfer of single or consecutive letters on paper or parchment so neat and exact that it is indistinguishable from printing ". In addition, the font is " deeper and more durable than any other font. It can not be erased or counterfeited, are left without visible traces. " About technical details there is nothing in the patent specification.
