Henry Roberts (governor)

Henry Roberts ( born June 22, 1853 in Brooklyn, New York City; † May 1, 1929 in Hartford, Connecticut ) was an American politician and governor of the U.S. state of Connecticut. He was a member of the Republican Party.

Early years and political rise

Henry Roberts graduated in 1878 at Yale University, then studied for a year at Columbia University and then received a law degree in 1879 from Yale Law School. He then practiced for several years as a lawyer before moving into the production company of his father, Hartford Woven Wire Mattress Company, boarding, which he was president from 1886 to 1907. He also made some lucrative business deals and was a director of various public companies. Roberts decided in 1897 to pursue a political career when he was City Council Hartford. Then he ran in 1899 for a seat in the House of Representatives from Connecticut, where he remained following his successful election to 1901. Roberts was from 1901 to 1902 Member of the Senate of Connecticut. Then in 1903 he was Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut, a position which he held until 1905.

Roberts won the 1904 Governor Republican nomination and was elected governor of Connecticut a short time later. During his tenure laws were passed prohibiting the operated underground bakeries, as well as a draft law initiated, the systematic handling of cars. Henry Roberts died on 1 May 1929 and was subsequently buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford. He was married to Carrie Elizabeth Smith. The couple had three children together.
