Henry Rono

Henry Rono ( born February 12, 1952 at Nandi District ) is a former Kenyan long-distance runner, who set four world records over 3000 m, 3000 m steeplechase, 5,000 m and 10,000 m in 1978 within 81 days.

In the same year Rono won the gold medals over 3000 m steeplechase and 5,000 m at the Commonwealth Games. After these successes Rono got psychological problems and suffered from paranoia. But he succeeded in 1981 an impressive comeback. He could improve on 13 September 5000 m world record again on 13:06,20 min. Due to this success, he was courted by many managers and started again at meetings in the 48-hour clock. The consequence was that he burned down and his best performances could not provide. Also, the change to the marathon distance not helped him to make a comeback; the Chicago Marathon 1986 he had to settle for a 26th place. In the 1990s, he caught with alcohol excesses stir. The Athletics IAAF had him even buying out of jail. At times he was living in a homeless shelter.

After he had lived for years of odd jobs, he managed an alcohol withdrawal. He now works as a physical education teacher in Albuquerque, supervised a team as a coach and endeavors in the vicinity of his former competition weight of 63 kg to come (with a size of 1.73 m), having in the meantime placed 100 kilos.
