Henry Smith (Rhode Island)

Henry Smith ( born February 10, 1766 Providence, Rhode Iceland, † June 28, 1818 ) was an American politician and 1805-1806 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland.

Career

About Henry Smith is not much known. He was born in Providence and was a member of the so-called Country Party, a local party that stood in opposition to the Federalist Party. In 1805 he was a member and President of the State Senate. In this capacity, he fell on October 15, 1805 after the death of Arthur Fenner of the post of governor of Rhode Iceland to. Until May 7, 1806, he exercised this office, he handed it over to the new Deputy Governor Isaac Wilbur, who thus became the acting governor. After his brief tenure Smith disappeared from the public spotlight. He died on 28 June 1818.
