Henry Smith (Wisconsin)

Henry Smith ( born July 22, 1838 in Baltimore, Maryland, † September 16, 1916 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin ) was an American politician. Between 1887 and 1889 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Henry Smith moved with his parents first to Massillon, Ohio, and then in 1844 to Milwaukee. There he attended the public schools. He then worked as a machinist. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the short-lived Labor Party. Between 1868 and 1872 he sat on the city council of Milwaukee. In 1878 he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly. From 1880 to 1887, he was twice more in the city council of Milwaukee. Between 1882 and 1884 he served as city treasurer ( City Comptroller ).

In the congressional elections of 1886, Smith was the fourth electoral district of Wisconsin in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded Isaac W. Van Schaick took on 4 March 1887 who had not a candidate. Since he lost to Van Schaick in the elections of 1888, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1889. After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives Smith worked as an architect and builder. In 1898 he was again elected to the City Council of Milwaukee. He remained until his death on September 16, 1916 Member of this body.
