Henry Stephenson

Henry Stephenson ( born April 16, 1871 Grenada, Lesser Antilles, † April 24, 1956 in San Francisco, California; actually Harry Stephenson Garraway ) was a British film and stage actor.

Life

Henry Stephenson was born in 1871 as Harry Stephenson Garraway on the island of Grenada in the Atlantic, his family was of British origin. After his school education in Rugby he began to theaters in the United Kingdom and the United States to act. In 1901 he made ​​his first Broadway appearance, more should follow in the coming decades. In 1917 he played in today largely forgotten silent films. Later, at the age of 60 years he managed the transition to talkies.

Especially in historical films, the Briton was very common to see. Along with Errol Flynn Stephenson was seen in Captain Blood (1935 ), The Treason of Surat Khan (1936 ), The Prince and the Pauper (1937 ) and The Private Lives of Queen ( 1939). In classical literary adaptations of British novels like Little Lord Fauntleroy (1936) and Oliver Twist ( 1948), he was also seen and became a character actor in major supporting roles.

He had in 1951 in the television series Studio One of his last more than 80 film and television appearances. He died five years later, eight days after his 85th birthday. Stephenson was married to the actress Ann Shoemaker, with whom he had a daughter. He was laid to rest in the Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla.
