Henry Venn (Clapham Sect)

Henry Venn (* 1724 in Surrey, † 1797) was a British preacher of the Church of England.

Life

Venn was born in Surrey and educated in Cambridge. 1749, he was ordained a priest in the Church of England. Initially he worked as an assistant preacher in West Horsley and Clapham, then from 1759 as curate in Huddersfield.

1771 he took a pastorate in Yelling, where he worked until the end of his term of service.

Venn maintained friendly connections with known preachers of his time, including John Wesley and George Whitefield. Venn held his sermons extemporaneously, they were evangelical character.

1763 Venn published a devotional book entitled "The Complete Duty of Man ," which became widespread among evangelical Christians minded and the previously published anonymously devotional book " The Whole Duty of Man " repressed.
