Henry W. Cushman

Henry Wyles Cushman ( born August 9, 1805 in Bernardston, Franklin County, Massachusetts, † November 21, 1863 ) was an American politician. Between 1851 and 1853 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Massachusetts.

Career

Henry Cushman attended the common schools and Norwich University, a military school in Vermont. He then worked for some time as a teacher and in the hospitality industry as well as farmers. He was President of the Franklin Agricultural Society and in 1847 the Franklin County Bank in Greenfield. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In his hometown he was 19 years as treasurer. He also sat for 15 years in the local school board. Between 1837 and 1844 he was several times delegate in the House of Representatives from Massachusetts. In 1844 he was elected to the State Senate. In 1847 he ran unsuccessfully for even the vice governor.

In 1851, Cushman but was then elected to the side of George S. Boutwell to the Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. This post he held 1851-1853. Yet he was assistant to the governor. After the end of his time as Lieutenant Governor, he continued his previous activities. He was a member of several organizations and associations. Henry Cushman died on November 21, 1863 in his home town of Bernardston.
