Henry Wanyoike

Henry Wanyoike ( born May 10, 1974 in Kikuyu, Kenya) is a blind athlete on the long haul and participants of several Paralympics.

Life

On 1 May 1995 Wanyoike blinded by a stroke overnight. In developing countries, does such a blindness that the person himself can no longer support. If there is no family, from whom it follows the ejection from the social community. Most of these people live in abject poverty.

Wanyoike but was taken to a supported by the Christian Blind Mission rehabilitation center. He became known during his first appearance at the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney. Blind runners have a sighted companion runner, which is connected via a ribbon with the rotor. Wanyoikes companion could not keep the fast pace and suffered a dizzy spell just before the finish. At this time Wanyoike had already run out to a big lead all other runners in the field, had to pull his companion crossed the finish line and won the race in spite of this delay.

Wanyoike 2005 was the first Kenyan athlete who was nominated for the Laureus World Sports Award (Category World Sportsman of the Year with disabilities).

He is the current world record holder over 5000 meters ( 15:11:07 min, Athens, 2004), 10,000 meters ( 31:37:25 min, Athens, 2004) and in the half marathon ( 1:10:26 h, Hong Kong, 2004). The world record in the marathon held Wanyoike until September 17, 2008 2:31:31 h (Hamburg, 2005) occupied. Currently, the world record is the Chinese runners Qi Shun (Beijing, 2:30:32 h).

2008 Wanyoike in Kenya suffered a serious car accident in which one person was killed. He injured his hand in, which was operated on and later ignited, after which they had to be operated again in Helsinki. At the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing Wanyoike was standard-bearer of Kenya and won the bronze medal over 5000 meters.

2009 took Henry Wanyoike after recovering slowly back to the old athletic shape.

Henry Wanyoike involved as an ambassador for the Christian Blind Mission, Seeing is Believing, the Paralympics (IPC) and for light for the world. He lives with his wife and four children in Kikuyu. He is the founder of the Henry Wanyoike Foundation, which supports various service projects and initiator of the Run for Hope. This was carried out for the fifth time in his home town of Kikuyu in 2011 and was recorded as now second largest sporting event in Kenya over 12,000 participants. Henry Wanyoike is one of three lead actors in the German documentary gold - you can pay more than you think, which was released in theaters on 28 February 2013.
