Henry Wells

Henry Wells ( born December 12, 1805 in Thetford, Vermont, † December 10, 1878 in Glasgow ) was an American entrepreneur and co-founder of American Express and Wells Fargo Company.

Life

Henry Wells began his career as a 16- year-old in a tannery. From own language problems he founded in the 20's a school for speech-impaired people. In 1836 he began working as a freight agent on the Erie Canal. He started his own business and was able to rapidly expand his business by low tariffs and use more and more mail and freight lines. The 1840 founded together with William Wells Fargo and other partners several joint ventures, including the now acting as the bank Wells Fargo company and now global credit card company American Express. The groups of companies could expand in the 1850s, especially by the so-called gold rush in California and were instrumental in the development of especially the northwestern U.S. territories, especially in California involved.
