Henry William Menard ( born December 10, 1920 in Fresno, California, † February 9, 1986 in La Jolla, California ) was an American geologist and oceanographer. He was an influential marine geologist in the U.S. and an early proponent of plate tectonics, for whose enforcement he did much for his marine geological research.

Menard studied geology at Caltech with a bachelor 's degree in 1942 and a master's degree in 1947, interrupted by military service in World War II as Luftbildauswerter in the South Pacific. In 1949 he received his doctorate at Harvard University in marine geology. Then he was at the Electronics Laboratory of the U.S. Navy in San Diego in the study group for marine soils and geomorphology of the ocean floor was in the 1950s, his main area of research. In 1955 he became associate professor of geology at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. In 1961, he received a full professorship there, and remained there, apart from two interruptions to the rest of his career. There he was involved in many oceanographic expeditions. 1965/66 he was a year advisor in the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the U.S. President in Washington DC 1978 to 1981 and was director of the United States Geological Survey. In 1981, he was back at the Scripps Institution.

Menard opened the 1950s with colleagues diving and consulting firm for Marine Research, the ATT advised, among others, in the laying of submarine cables. He became a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1968, he was a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1985 he was awarded the William Bowie Medal of the American Geophysical Union.
