Henryk Muszyński

Henryk Józef Muszyński ( born March 20, 1933 Kościerzyna, Poland) is a retired Metropolitan Archbishop of Gniezno ( Gniezno ) and thus Emeritus Primate of Poland.

Life

After his ordination on 28 April 1957, the Old Testament scholar, conducted research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg ( Qumran Research Centre) and in Rome. There he received his doctorate in 1973 with a thesis on " foundation, image and metaphor in the manuscripts from Qumran " and taught after his habilitation, even in his time as bishop, at the Theological Academy in Warsaw.

Henryk Muszyński was appointed on February 23, 1985 by Pope John Paul II as titular bishop of Villa Regis and auxiliary bishop in Chelmno. He received his episcopal consecration on March 25, 1985, the Primate of Poland, Cardinal Józef Glemp.

When the Polish Episcopate was reorganized in March 1992, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II, to whom he was devoted friendship, archbishop of Gniezno. Previously, he was since 1987 Bishop of Wloclawek. Muszyński who speaks excellent German, after his ordination some time worked in Wuppertal.

For his services he received the 1997 Dr. Leopold Lucas Prize of the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, 1999, the Buber- Rosenzweig Medal and in 2003 an honorary doctorate of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.

Archbishop Muszyński is a member of the international committee of the price Adalbert Foundation.
